Moving beyond conventional festival themes, the Dharmanagar Jail Road Sarbojanin Durga Puja Committee has dedicated its 45th year celebrations to the message of “Nari Nabajagaran” (Women’s Renaissance), highlighting women’s empowerment, social reform and the long journey towards gender equality. Through a thoughtfully designed thematic presentation, organisers have transformed this year’s Durga Puja into a platform for social awareness alongside religious devotion.
Organised by the Puja Committee with the support of Club Consensus, the festival has emerged as one of the major attractions of the town during the Sharadiya festivities. Built at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 13 lakh, the pandal reflects the craftsmanship of local artisans and seeks to narrate the story of women's awakening in society through art and visual presentation.
The theme-based decoration prominently features portraits of eminent women who have made significant contributions in various fields, while also paying tribute to legendary social reformers Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Raja Rammohan Roy. Their pioneering roles in promoting women's education, advocating social reforms and championing women's rights have been highlighted throughout the pavilion, reinforcing the central message of the theme.
The inauguration ceremony was marked by festive fervour as newly elected MLA Jahar Chakraborty formally inaugurated the puja mandap. The occasion was further enlivened by traditional Dhamail performances, creating a vibrant cultural atmosphere. Following the inauguration, the pandal was opened to visitors, drawing a steady stream of devotees and theme enthusiasts eager to witness the unique concept and artistic presentation.
The organisers emphasised that their activities extend far beyond the annual Durga Puja celebrations. Throughout the year, Club Consensus remains actively involved in various social welfare initiatives aimed at supporting the community. Continuing this tradition, the organisation distributed garments among women on Shashthi, combining festive celebrations with a message of social responsibility and inclusiveness.
Adding to the festive appeal, a series of cultural programmes has been scheduled from Saptami to Navami, with special focus on providing a platform to local artists. Musical performances and cultural showcases featuring regional talent are expected to enhance the celebratory atmosphere while encouraging cultural engagement among the younger generation.
A major attraction will be the Maha Bhog on Navami, for which extensive preparations have been undertaken. Organisers expect nearly 4,000 to 5,000 devotees to partake in the community feast, viewing the event as an opportunity to strengthen social harmony, communal unity and the spirit of togetherness.
Committee members and volunteers have been working with enthusiasm and dedication to make the landmark 45th edition a success. Their collective effort, coupled with the creativity of local artisans and the social outreach initiatives of Club Consensus, has given the celebration a distinctive character that blends religion, culture and social consciousness.
With its inspiring theme of women’s empowerment, meaningful social initiatives, community participation and rich cultural programming, the 45th edition of the Dharmanagar Jail Road Sarbojanin Durga Puja has positioned itself as more than just a festive attraction. It stands as a thoughtful tribute to the ideals of women’s education, equality and social reform while carrying forward a four-and-a-half-decade-long legacy of community celebration.
