Shedeur Sanders could be pushed further down the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback depth chart after Dillon Gabriel began taking second-team offensive reps in practice.
Sanders has served as Deshaun Watson’s backup this season, but Gabriel’s increased involvement raises questions about his place in Cleveland’s plans once the injured rookie returns.
The Browns are 4-2 under head coach Todd Monken, with Watson holding on to the starting job and giving the coaching staff little reason to make a change.
Dillon Gabriel’s return could change Shedeur Sanders’ role
ESPN Cleveland host Tony Rizzo reported that Gabriel had been taking second-team reps, although the quarterback remains on injured reserve with a back injury and cannot play against the Tennessee Titans.
Rizzo said: “Dillon Gabriel was taking second-team reps in practice this week. He can’t play in this game because he’s not activated. However, we’re coming up on this. We have to win Sunday first, but this is a big thing.”
Gabriel’s involvement could indicate that Cleveland is preparing him to take over the backup role when he is available again. Sanders remains second on the Browns’ published depth chart, but that position could change.
The situation has also fuelled speculation about Sanders’ future ahead of the NFL trade deadline. He recently hired Adie von Gontard of Young Money APAA Sports as his representative, although that development does not confirm he has requested a move.
Former NFL linebacker Willie McGinest believes Sanders must focus on his performances rather than the attention surrounding his name.
Speaking on the All the Smoke podcast, McGinest said: “At some point, if he’s doing what he needs to do on the football field, he’ll get an opportunity….”
McGinest also stressed that coaches see aspects of quarterback play that supporters cannot judge from watching games alone, including command of the offence and preparation during practice.
For now, Watson remains the Browns’ starter after leading Cleveland to four wins in six games. His late drive helped set up the winning field goal against Baltimore, strengthening his position.
ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi suggested the Browns could keep all four quarterbacks, including rookie Taylen Green, while assessing their options before the deadline.
Sanders has attempted just one pass this season, leaving him with limited opportunities to make his case on the field. With Gabriel working his way back and Watson continuing to win, the young quarterback faces an uncertain path towards meaningful playing time in Cleveland.
