Police have arrested 18 people after activists of the banned Chhatra League staged a flash procession on Nurpur-Telikona Road in Cumilla city yesterday (23 October).
The arrests were made during separate drives by the district detective branch (DB) and Kotwali Model Police Station from last night until this morning, said Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Touhidul Anwar today (24 October).
According to police, Chhatra League activists brought out the procession on Nurpur-Telikona Road while the Juma prayer sermon was underway.
After the procession, police reviewed video footage of the incident and identified those who took part. DB and Kotwali police then conducted joint operations and arrested 18 people, including Kayum, who allegedly led the procession.
Kayum is the son of Jakir Hossain, a resident of Ward No 5 of Panchthubi Union under Cumilla Sadar upazila, according to local sources.
Of the 18, 16 were arrested by Kotwali police and two by the district DB, the OC said.
The detainees will be sent to a Cumilla court after the completion of the necessary legal procedures, he added.
