Josh Allen’s eyebrow-raising interception meant Pat McAfee’s reaction became a talking point of its own on Monday Night Football. The ESPN analyst called it an “arm punt,” a phrase that some fans saw as a reasonable football description, and others viewed as an excuse for a costly mistake.
This split spilled onto social media, where viewers questioned whether McAfee would have described another quarterback’s interception the same way.
NFL Fans Criticize Pat McAfee for Calling Josh Allen’s INT an ‘Arm Punt’
With the Buffalo Bills leading late in the first half, Allen threw a third-down pass that Los Angeles Rams defensive back Jaylen Watson intercepted near midfield.
McAfee’s reaction to the interception quickly drew attention when he described Allen’s deep third-down throw as an “arm punt,” prompting some viewers to accuse the ESPN personality of downplaying the turnover.
An “arm punt” has been used to describe a deep pass on third down that gets intercepted but can still function like a punt by pushing the opposing offense back.
McAfee’s comment drew criticism from viewers who believed the explanation softened a costly decision by one of the NFL’s biggest stars.
One account shared the clip on X and wrote, “THIS IS SHAMELESS.”
The response showed frustration among fans who believe prominent quarterbacks receive gentler treatment from national broadcasters. One viewer questioned the wording directly, posting, “Y’all hear Pat McAfee calling it an arm punt??? Can’t make this up.”

For some, the issue was not whether the phrase existed in the NFL rule book, but whether it was appropriate in that moment.
Another fan appealed to McAfee’s reputation for unfiltered commentary, writing, “Pat McAfee Show, did you just say arm punt from Josh Allen, instead of interception? Come on, man. You’re better than that.”
There was a football argument behind McAfee’s description. Allen’s interception came on third-and-6 from Buffalo’s 16-yard line, and Watson’s return gave the Rams possession at their own 43. The turnover produced a field-position result similar to a punt, although it remained an interception on the official stat sheet.
The criticism also extended to the wider broadcast. Play-by-play announcer Joe Buck described the interception as being “almost like a punt,” prompting one viewer to accuse ESPN’s commentators of protecting Allen.
The fan wrote, “Now Pat McAfee out here calling it an arm punt. Jesus, this guy gets total protection from his media partners.”
Not everyone viewed McAfee’s remark as serious analysis. One fan offered a more charitable interpretation, saying, “I thought he said it tongue-in-cheek.”
This distinction matters because McAfee, a former NFL punter, has used his playing experience and informal delivery to build his media profile. Some viewers saw the comment as a joke rather than an attempt to excuse Allen’s decision.
Others defended the terminology itself, separating its football meaning from the controversy surrounding its use. One fan wrote, “’Arm Punt’ is a situational description. Been around for a long time. And I see Pat McAfee just said the exact same thing I did.”
Another supported that argument, adding, “Hardly a new term… I remember hearing it on VSiN several years ago.”
