A woman in her 20s who went into cardiac arrest during a stabbing attack at a large commercial building in Incheon remains unconscious after emergency surgery. Nine people were injured in the attack, and the woman is being treated in an intensive care unit.
Nine people were wounded in a stabbing rampage at the See&See building in Guwol-dong, Namdong District, Incheon, on the afternoon of the 13th, according to police and medical officials. Among them, a woman in her 20s identified only as A went into cardiac arrest at the scene and was taken to a hospital, where she failed to regain consciousness even after emergency surgery, officials said. She is currently in intensive care. The other eight victims are not in life-threatening condition.
Police said the suspect, a 59-year-old identified only as B, entered the building from outside on the first floor, took an elevator to the second floor and began attacking people with knives. B then moved up and down the escalator at the center of the building while continuing the attack, and was subdued on the third floor after bystanders threw chairs and other objects at the suspect.
The suspect was holding a knife in each hand at the time of the attack, with the weapons taped to B's hands with white tape, police said. Officers recovered two knives at the scene and seized two blunt weapons from B's bag.
The suspect had previously been punished on charges of attempted murder, police said. B was wearing an electronic ankle monitor at the time of the attack. B was also under investigation after being booked by the Incheon Gyeyang Police Station in September on charges of carrying a knife in a public place.
Police are questioning the suspect about the motive and whether the attack was premeditated. They plan to consider seeking an arrest warrant on the 14th.
