Dubai: Business budgets reveal where leaders believe their next phase of growth will come from. For UAE companies planning for 2027, that could mean AI tools that improve productivity or specialist skills that strengthen their operations. Understanding the full cost of this gives businesses a better basis for judging returns and deciding how much financial flexibility to retain as the global economy evolves.
Cost behind new capabilities
Gartner forecasts global AI software spending of approximately $656 billion in 2027, but AI earns its place in a budget through the capacity it creates. Automated invoice processing and receipt matching can help a finance team handle more transactions without expanding headcount at the same pace. Faster reconciliation also brings spending information together sooner, leaving more time to examine cash needs and commitments. Those gains depend on preparing records and connecting accounting systems, with cybersecurity protecting the financial information moving between them. Training and output checks remain ongoing costs, while usage charges can grow with transaction volumes and affect the return.
Specialist hiring carries similar costs beyond salary and health cover, because recruitment takes management time and new employees need support before becoming productive. Developing existing staff can sometimes meet the same need while retaining knowledge already within the business. That knowledge has financial value too, since savings on training or benefits can be outweighed by the cost of replacing experienced employees.
Gap between growth and cash
Dubai’s construction sector grew 5.1% year on year in the first half of 2026. For developers and contractors, a stronger pipeline can mean paying suppliers and staff before customer installments arrive, with financing charges accumulating during the wait. Retailers importing stock face a similar gap, as freight costs and delivery reliability influence how much inventory they hold and how long it needs funding.
A view of approved supplier commitments alongside money already paid shows how much of the budget remains available for expansion. Hotels and airlines face a similar judgement when stronger bookings justify extra staff or better service, while permanent expansion creates costs that outlast a busy period. Smaller businesses with limited reserves have less room to absorb these commitments before revenue arrives.
Small buys turn commitments
Cash leakage can begin with a legitimate purchase that outlives its purpose. A subscription keeps renewing after a team stops using it, while another department pays for a similar service. The same scattered purchasing makes a client visit harder to assess when accommodation and transport are recorded separately from the flight. Booking changes and currency charges may then pass without scrutiny, adding costs that were absent from the original approval.
Growth puts more purchasing decisions in employees’ hands, making clear spending boundaries part of protecting the budget. An agreed limit for project materials gives staff room to act, while restricting payments to relevant suppliers reduces exposure to unauthorised purchases. Receipts linked to payments and timely transaction alerts also give finance evidence to question suspicious charges or potentially fraudulent expense claims. Connecting that activity with supplier payments gives leaders a timely view of how much of the budget remains available to support growth.
Keeping the budget flexible
An unexpected opportunity can make the same demands on cash as an unexpected bill. When every available dirham is already committed, even a promising new order can become difficult to fund. Reducing cash leakage preserves money for both, while a clearer view of commitments shows how much remains available for the next investment. That gives everyday spending control a place in the growth strategy, helping businesses pursue worthwhile opportunities while meeting the obligations already on their books.
