The General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU-Ghana), Mr. Morgan Ayawine, has been honoured as one of Africa’s Most Influential Persons for 2026.
He was recognised at a gathering of distinguished African leaders in Kigali, Rwanda, on September 25, 2026, for his influential leadership and advocacy in trade unionism, corporate governance and government policy direction aimed at promoting socio-economic development, business growth and industrial advancement.
According to the organisers, his influence and advocacy contributed to preventing the transfer of strategic national assets to private investors and facilitated the recapitalisation of some State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) that might otherwise have collapsed.
As leader of a union representing workers in industry, banking, finance, commerce, hospitality, public boards and corporations, the informal sector and other sectors of the Ghanaian economy, Mr. Ayawine has maintained a constructive relationship with employers and government, contributing to industrial harmony and a conducive working environment in the country, thereby supporting sustainable business practices and socio-economic stability.
The recognition, organisers said, was not a surprise to those familiar with his leadership, but rather a fitting acknowledgement of his dedication and influence, his unwavering commitment to ensuring that the right things are done in the interest of the country and humanity, and his tenacity and principled approach to leadership.
Mr. Ayawine was unable to attend the awards ceremony in Kigali due to other engagements in Ghana and Europe.
A delegation from The Business Executive, organisers of the Africa’s Most Influential Persons Awards 2026, subsequently presented the award to him at the ICU-Ghana Head Office, Hall of Trade Unions, Accra, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, in the presence of the leadership, management and staff of ICU-Ghana.
The award package comprised a medal, plaque, citation and a book. The certificate of honour bore the inscription: “In recognition of your exceptional leadership, remarkable achievements, and valuable contribution to the growth and development of Africa. Your dedication, integrity, and commitment to excellence exemplify the true spirit of eminence and inspire positive impact within society.”
Earlier this year, Mr. Ayawine received similar recognitions, including the Ghana Development Awards 2026 for Outstanding Contribution to Labour Rights and Industrial Harmony for National Development in March 2026, and a continental award in Zambia as Africa’s Most Respected CEO in Labour and Union Leadership in August 2026, both conferred by The Business Executive.
In a brief remark after receiving the award, Mr. Ayawine attributed the recognition to the unwavering support of the leadership, management, staff, and rank and file of the Union, as well as its social partners, expressing appreciation for their collaboration and looking forward to continued partnership for their mutual benefit and advancement of shared objectives.
