The bomb threat that prompted a multi-disciplinary security response at King Phalo Airport in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday has been declared a false alarm after police searched the aircraft and luggage and found no explosives or suspicious objects.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed on Wednesday, October 21, that all passengers, pilots and cabin crew safely disembarked from the commercial aircraft following the threat, which was reported by an unknown caller.
“The scene was declared all clear and handed back to airport security,” Gantana said.
No explosives found during search
According to police, the KuGompo Explosives Unit received a complaint about a bomb threat at the airport and responded to the scene, where members were briefed by airport security.
The threat was reportedly communicated through a call to the passenger information desk, with the caller alleging that a bomb was on board the aircraft.
The airport subsequently notified SAPS, prompting the activation of a multi-disciplinary response team.
The operation involved the Bomb Disposal Unit, K9 explosive detection dogs, airport security, a hostage negotiator, the fire department and Emergency Medical Services.
“A systematic search of the aircraft and luggage was conducted. No explosives, explosive devices, suspicious objects, or hazardous materials were found,” Gantana said.
Police open criminal case
SAPS confirmed that a criminal case had been registered under Section 27(1A)(a) of the Explosives Act, Act 26 of 1956.
Investigations are continuing to identify and trace the person who made the call.
“The SAPS reminds the public that making a false bomb threat is a serious criminal offence, carrying a potential sentence of up to ten years' imprisonment,” Gantana said.
Police urged members of the public not to speculate about the incident and to allow investigators to carry out their work without interference.
“No further details can be shared at this stage to protect the integrity of the investigation,” Gantana said.
