ET OnlineDaylight Saving Time: 2026 is a unique year for Halloween and daylight saving time. Daylight saving time simply means that Americans will turn their clocks back one hour on November 1, per usual. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 1, when clocks move back one hour to 1 a.m. In 2026, daylight saving time went into effect at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 8, and clocks will be returned to their regular time at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1.
When is Daylight saving time ending?
The change marks the return to standard time and gives Americans an extra hour of sleep. Daylight saving time also brings earlier sunsets and more morning daylight as winter approaches. Under current law, daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.
US President Donald Trump has put efforts over the past few months amid growing public support to end clock changes. But lawmakers have not yet sent the Sunshine Protection Act to the president's desk. For now, federal law remains unchanged, and most Americans should prepare for the clock to fall back.
Why are Americans still changing the clock?
The answer is pretty simple. Congress has not yet changed the law. The Sunshine Protection Act, which seeks to make daylight saving time permanent and end the practice of changing clocks twice a year, passed the House in July with a 301-117 vote. However, the bill remains stalled in the Senate, where it must clear its final legislative hurdle before reaching President Donald Trump’s desk.
Lawmakers left Washington without taking up the legislation, meaning the current system of seasonal clock changes remains in place. Consequently, clocks across most of the United States will be turned back on November 1.
Trump has repeatedly urged Congress to end the twice-yearly clock change and keep the nation on daylight saving time year-round. "Republicans in the Senate have to get moving on what I call the 'No More Changing of Clocks Act,' officially known as The Sunshine Protection Act," Trump wrote in an Oct. 2 post on Truth Social.
Calling the current system "ridiculous," Trump argued that changing clocks twice a year is costly, stressful and unpopular with the public.
"People don't want to go around changing their Clocks anymore and, besides, far and away, most people like having an hour of extra sunlight in the evening, rather than in the morning," he added.
Do all states observe daylight saving time?
No. Several states and US territories remain on standard time year-round:
Hawaii
Most of Arizona (except the Navajo Nation)
American Samoa
Guam
Northern Mariana Islands
Puerto Rico
U.S. Virgin Islands
Daylight saving time coincides with Halloween
Halloween lands on Saturday, Oct. 31, this year. You will note that Halloween is on Saturday this year and at 2 a.m. (which is technically Sunday morning), clocks will be turned back an hour, giving revelers an extra hour to celebrate and everyone else, an extra hour to sleep in on Sunday. The next time Oct. 31 and daylight saving time coincide also won’t be until 2037. S
