The Chennai police have arrested two men, including an employee of a jewellery shop, for allegedly stealing gold chains from a jewellery store in New Washermenpet.
The police said Harish Kumar, 50, who lives on Avoor Muthiah Street in New Washermenpet, runs a jewellery shop on T.H. Road in the locality. On September 12, he contacted Robin, a jewellery workshop owner on Cross Road, over the phone and asked him to bring 15 gold chains, each weighing five sovereigns, to his shop for showing to customers.
Robin subsequently delivered 15 gold chains weighing approximately 633 grams. As the customers did not like the chains, Harish Kumar handed them over to his employee, Dharam Singh, that evening and sent him on his two-wheeler to return the jewellery to Robin.
However, Dharam Singh did not return for a long time. When Harish Kumar tried to contact him, he found that his phone had been switched off. Dharam Singh had reportedly fled with the gold chains and the two-wheeler.
Based on a complaint lodged by Harish Kumar, the police launched an investigation and arrested Dharam Singh, 25, from Sojat Road in Rajasthan’s Pali district, and his friend Jai Singh, 27, from Ajmer district in Rajasthan.
During interrogation, the police found that Dharam Singh had allegedly stolen the gold jewellery with the help of Jai Singh and melted and sold some of the chains.
The police recovered 485 grams of gold, comprising gold chains and a gold bar, ₹4,23,500 in cash, and the two-wheeler from the accused.
