Bears Make Surprising Caleb Williams Injury Decision vs. Falcons

The Chicago Bears received encouraging news about Caleb Williams this week, but their starting quarterback is not guaranteed to return Sunday.

Despite participating fully in practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Williams has officially been listed as questionable for Chicago's upcoming matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

ESPN's Adam Schefter confirmed the designation Friday, leaving uncertainty surrounding the quarterback's availability.

Williams has missed Chicago's last three games after suffering a right hamstring injury during the Bears' Week 2 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The former No. 1 overall pick recently revealed that the injury was more serious than initially believed.

"It was a hamstring tear," Williams told reporters Thursday, describing the injury as a significant setback.

Although Williams has made considerable progress in his recovery, he acknowledged that several medical evaluations must be completed before he can return.

The quarterback explained that the team's medical staff is putting him through a series of physical tests designed to determine whether his hamstring can withstand the demands of an NFL game.

"I do not know if I'm playing yet," Williams said.

Despite that uncertainty, Williams expressed confidence in his physical condition, revealing that he has been able to run at speeds comparable to his pre-injury performance. His participation throughout the week represents an important step toward returning to Chicago's starting lineup.

However, the Bears appear unwilling to rush their quarterback back before receiving final medical clearance.

Head coach Ben Johnson has emphasized the importance of Williams' long-term health, particularly with Chicago preparing for a challenging stretch of its schedule.

The Bears have managed to remain competitive without Williams, going 2-1 during his absence.

Backup quarterbacks Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum have helped keep Chicago in the NFC North race, but Williams' return would provide a significant boost to the offense.

His mobility and ability to extend plays are important parts of Chicago's offensive approach, making a complete recovery especially important. Sunday's matchup against Atlanta presents an opportunity for the Bears to improve their 3-2 record.

For now, Williams' status remains uncertain despite his encouraging week of practice.

Chicago will continue evaluating its quarterback before making a final decision on whether he can return against the Falcons.
