By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 37-year-old Belize City fisherman has been charged with possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply after police allegedly discovered 222.9 grams of suspected crack cocaine, equivalent to nearly half a pound, inside his knapsack.
Eugene Herman Neal, of Handyside Street, appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, October 21, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to police, officers conducting a mobile patrol on Handyside Street around 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday noticed Neal walking with a black schoolbag on his back. Officers reportedly became suspicious of his behaviour and stopped him for a search.
Although nothing illegal was found on his person, a search of the knapsack allegedly uncovered a bag containing a rocky substance suspected to be crack cocaine.
Neal was escorted to the Queen Street Police Station, where the substance was weighed in his presence and recorded at 222.9 grams, just under a quarter of a kilogram.
During his arraignment, the prosecution raised no objection to bail, and the magistrate granted Neal bail of $3,000 with one surety of the same amount or two sureties of $1,500 each.
However, Neal’s release was delayed after court records revealed that he still owed $405 in connection with a previous drug possession matter dating back to 2023. He was informed that the outstanding amount would have to be paid before his bail could be processed.
As a condition of bail, Neal must report to the Queen Street Police Station every Wednesday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
He is scheduled to return to court on December 21, 2026.
