By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Prime Minister John Briceño says the Government is still exploring the possibility of extending Mexico’s Tren Maya railway into Belize.
He said the Inter American Development Bank is conducting a study on what it would take to bring the train to Belize.
Briceño said that if Tren Maya were extended into Belize and then on to Guatemala, it could open up opportunities not only for tourism but also for the use of Belize’s airport facilities.
He also tied the idea to plans for a new modern port in Belize. According to the Prime Minister, southern Mexico could use the port to move goods, while Guatemala, whose Atlantic port he said is too small and sometimes leaves ships waiting three weeks or more to unload, could transship cargo through Belize.
“There are a lot of opportunities with the connection of Tren Maya,” Briceño said.
The comments come as Belize prepares to expand its Mexican Border Crossing Card programme, allowing eligible Mexican nationals to visit anywhere in the country for up to seven days.
