Alhaji Mohammed Ndarani Mohammed, SAN, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Niger State, has been associated with philanthropic interventions, legal advocacy and development initiatives targeting water supply, education, youth empowerment and community welfare ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Ndarani’s interventions include the provision of more than 80 solar-powered boreholes across communities in the state, scholarship support for no fewer than 120 university students and financial assistance to women and youths.
One of the reported empowerment programmes involved the distribution of ₦20,000 each to 400 beneficiaries, amounting to ₦8 million, to support their immediate needs and small-scale economic activities.
He was also reported to have donated ₦30 million to victims of the devastating floods in Mokwa, while advocating improved disaster preparedness, environmental protection and sustained investment in flood prevention measures.
Beyond philanthropy, Ndarani has been associated with legal representation for communities seeking redress over environmental damage, displacement and livelihood losses arising from major infrastructure projects.
A prominent example is the case involving Samboro community in Madaka District of Rafi Local Government Area, whose residents sought compensation over losses allegedly linked to the Zungeru Hydropower Dam project.
The Minna High Court IV reportedly awarded the plaintiffs ₦1.15 trillion in compensation, alongside ₦100 million in general damages and litigation costs, with 10 per cent post-judgment interest per annum.
The case highlighted the importance of protecting the rights of host communities and ensuring that development projects adequately address environmental consequences, compensation and livelihood restoration.
Ndarani is also reported to be pursuing legal action at the Supreme Court over Niger State’s claimed entitlement to benefits associated with electricity generation, an issue with potential implications for development funding and communities affected by power infrastructure.
In addition, he has advocated the activation of Baro Port in Agaie Local Government Area to strengthen inland water transportation, facilitate agricultural trade, attract investment and create employment opportunities.
The SDP candidate is also championing the constitutional recognition of the roles of traditional rulers and direct autonomy for Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
He argues that strengthening traditional institutions within a clearly defined constitutional framework and empowering local councils could improve grassroots governance, conflict resolution, accountability and community development.
Observers of the state’s political landscape may assess these interventions in the context of the wider challenges confronting Niger, including access to potable water, educational opportunities, unemployment, infrastructure deficits and environmental vulnerability.
However, translating philanthropic interventions and development advocacy into sustainable statewide progress would require effective public institutions, transparent resource management, continuity and measurable development outcomes.
As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 governorship election, Ndarani’s humanitarian engagements, legal practice and development advocacy are expected to form part of the broader public discussion on leadership priorities and the future direction of Niger State.
