Liverpool came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Brentford in Saturday’s Premier League encounter, ending the hosts’ unbeaten start to the season.
Brentford took the lead in the 44th minute when Keane Lewis-Potter headed home Igor Thiago’s cross to put the hosts ahead at the Gtech Community Stadium.
However, the match took a dramatic turn in first-half stoppage time when Brentford midfielder Yehor Yarmolyuk was sent off for violent conduct following an incident involving Liverpool defender Jérémy Jacquet.
Liverpool capitalised on their numerical advantage after the break, with Victor Muñoz restoring parity in the 62nd minute.
The forward received a pass from Florian Wirtz, cut inside and fired a left-footed shot into the bottom corner to bring the visitors back into the contest.
Alexander Isak completed Liverpool’s comeback eight minutes later, scoring the decisive goal in the 70th minute.
The Swedish striker finished from close range after Bradley Barcola headed down Alexis Mac Allister’s cross into his path.
Brentford continued to threaten despite being a player down, but Liverpool held on to claim all three points.
The hosts’ difficult afternoon worsened in stoppage time when Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow card, leaving Brentford to finish the match with nine players.
The defeat ended Brentford’s unbeaten run in the league, while the victory provided a boost for Liverpool following their previous Premier League defeat to Manchester City.
Liverpool also suffered injury setbacks during the encounter, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong forced off.
The result lifted Liverpool above Brentford into fifth place in the Premier League standings.
