Over at ESPN, Brian Windhorst has a column up that starts with this headline: “Why Cooper Flagg’s ascension is starting to feel inevitable.”
Pretty solid hook there, and he’s right.
Last year, Flagg surprised people with a very complete game. His biggest weakness was probably outside shooting, something he’s been working on over the summer.
Flagg is talking, directing traffic, and playing aggressively for the Dallas Mavericks.
In short, he’s looking like a successful rookie who is moving on to become a dominant player.
Former Blue Devil Kyrie Irving said this: “He’s going to lead this franchise into the future. You can definitely bank on that. He deserves a lot of the praise he’s gotten because he’s carried a lot. … He’s wise beyond his years.”
New coach Dusty May is also impressed, saying this on Dallas Media Day:
“I’m amazed. When you look at how productive he is as a 19-year-old in this league, with the weight that was put on him last year, as far as seeing different defenses (as) a focal point….[it’s incredibly impressive].”
He also noted that Flagg is highly intelligent, a great teammate, incredibly hard-working, and something very rare: an unselfish superstar.
In short, we’re just at the dawn of the Age of Flagg.
By the way, if, like us, you’re looking forward to seeing Flagg and fellow Brotherhood member Cameron Boozer face off, the first game will be on January 10. The teams will play again on March 9, and a third time on April 11.
All three should be fascinating.
