The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has handed Cristiano Ronaldo a 30-day suspension and fined the player €255 for leaving the national team’s training camp in Denmark without authorisation.
The disciplinary sanction, announced on Monday, October 19, 2026, follows the Al-Nassr forward’s departure from Portugal’s camp on September 30, amid a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time.
Ronaldo reportedly became frustrated after remaining on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway, having expected to feature in the match.
The 41-year-old subsequently left the camp ahead of Portugal’s Nations League fixture against Denmark, prompting disciplinary proceedings by the federation.
In a subsequent public statement, the Portugal captain apologised to his teammates and supporters and acknowledged that his decision to leave the squad warranted punishment.
Ronaldo also reportedly expressed the view that, as captain and a role model, he should accept responsibility for his actions rather than expect preferential treatment.
The federation’s decision brings the disciplinary case to a conclusion, with the suspension understood to have been backdated to cover the period following his departure.
The sanction is not expected to affect Ronaldo’s club appearances for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, as it concerns his eligibility to represent Portugal.
With the suspension due to expire before Portugal’s November international fixtures, Ronaldo could be available for selection, although his return will depend on the national team’s plans.
Portugal have yet to confirm whether the forward will feature in the upcoming matches.
Ronaldo was yet to react over the recent development at the time of filing this report.
