(CNS): Adrian Gordon (34), who raped a woman in June 2024 with sustained and extreme violence, was handed a 16-year jail term on Friday, having been convicted by a jury in June. Gordon had met the woman in a bar and had offered her a ride home. The members of the jury did not believe his claims that he had paid for consensual sex.
According to the victim, when they arrived at her apartment, he had asked for water, but then ignored her request to stay in the car. Instead, he grabbed her hair and forced her inside. He repeatedly punched and choked her before raping her, first using a condom and then again without using one. During the ordeal, he inflicted extensive injuries, including bruising and a broken nose.
She escaped and ran naked into the street, but he pursued her and assaulted her again, trying to drag her back indoors as she screamed for help. This was captured on CCTV and witnessed by a neighbour.
As she delivered her ruling, Justice Cheryll Richards said it was a horrific, sustained attack and the victim had suffered serious psychological trauma. The excessive violence combined with the serious physical and psychological injuries, as well as the humiliation his victim had suffered, warranted a starting point of 20 years’ imprisonment.
Aggravating factors included Gordon’s lack of remorse or empathy for the complainant. However, the judge accepted his lack of any previous convictions in the Cayman Islands as a mitigating factor, and reduced the jail time to 16 years.
The judge also imposed a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will come into effect when Gordon is released from prison, prohibiting him from making any contact with the victim or coming within 100 yards of her.
It is understood that Gordon is originally from Jamaica, but it was not made clear in court whether or not he had attained Caymanian status.
