Florida Officer Charged with Identity Theft to Seize Deceased Man’s Home

A Florida law enforcement officer was taken into custody on Tuesday, accused of unlawfully taking over the home of a man he discovered dead during a police call in 2022. Allegations suggest he used the deceased man's identity to conduct official transactions as though the owner was still alive.

The 35-year-old officer, affiliated with the Lauderhill Police Department in Broward County, is suspected of leveraging his knowledge of the death to occupy the property without authorization. Reports indicate he paid taxes and utility bills in the deceased's name and secured building permits with allegedly forged documents.

Telemundo 51 reported that the officer, identified by the initials B.S., faces multiple criminal charges, including misuse of personal information, misconduct in office, and cyber-related crimes.

The incident dates back to July 11, 2022, when the officer was called to a Lauderhill residence for a welfare check. Inside, police discovered the lifeless body of 71-year-old Dennis West, who had died of natural causes.

According to an investigation by WPBF 25 News, the officer falsely represented himself as a friend of West to the Broward Medical Examiner's Office, despite no evidence of prior acquaintance. He also inaccurately claimed West had no surviving family, which was later disproven as heirs with legitimate claims to the property were identified.

Details from Boca Post outline that the officer was paying real estate taxes and utility bills under the deceased's name. It is also alleged that he used West's personal information to obtain municipal permits for home repairs, even going so far as to forge the owner’s signature and misuse a notary's name and seal without authorization.

Investigators discovered the officer exploited law enforcement databases to access West's personal information. Additional scrutiny of documents filed with the Broward Property Appraiser's Office revealed the officer declared possession of the home in February 2025, just months after West’s death, though legal ownership remains unconfirmed by authorities.

The criminal investigation was initiated on May 27, 2026, following a complaint about potential misconduct. The Broward Sheriff’s Office and the county's Property Appraisal crime unit conducted the investigation. By July 22, the Lauderhill Police Department had relieved the officer of his duties.

Charges against the officer include public office misconduct, criminal use of a deceased person’s identification, unlawful use of personal information, cybercrime, and illicit use of communication devices.
