KUALA LUMPUR: Lee Biscuits Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a biscuit brand established in 1934, will cease production at its Pontian factory by the end of this month.
The closure is part of a restructuring exercise by its parent group, which is reportedly exiting snack manufacturing to consolidate its assets and focus on its core holdings, including rubber and palm oil operations.
Suppliers and customers began receiving notices of the production halt last month, while the factory is also reportedly laying off its employees.
Pekan Nanas assemblyman Tan Eng Meng confirmed receiving news of the impending closure when contacted by China Press.
The closure marks the second Lee Group food facility in Johor to shut down in three years.
In November 2023, the group closed its Lee Pineapple cannery in Skudai as it shifted its focus to oil palm cultivation.
Lee Biscuits, also known as Nam Lee, was founded by Lee Kong Chian and is known for products such as Marie biscuits, saltine crackers, banana puffs and iced gem biscuits.
The brand originated in Singapore before production was moved to Tampoi, Johor Baru, in 1955 and later to Pontian in 2005.
