(ANSA) - ROME, 16 OTT - Premier Giorgia Meloni on Friday called on the opposition to condemn the violence at anti-government student protests across Italy earlier in the day.
High-school students urging more cash for schools and less for arms threw rocks and firecrackers at police in Rome, Turin and other cities.
Regarding the student protests, "I am always pleased when there is mobilization. But violence—such as the use of homemade explosive devices or attacks on law enforcement—is a different matter. We must be clear and in agreement on this. I say this because I am looking at the comments from opposition leaders regarding the protests, and they have failed to utter a single word of condemnation. I call on all Italian political forces to urge that demonstrations take place without violence." Speaking after the European Council in Brussels, Meloni called on opposition parties to be "clear" on this issue. (ANSA).
