A shocking video showing two masked young people riding on top of a moving metro train in Budapest has circulated on social media, prompting a police investigation. The pair can be seen running between carriages as the train travels along Metro Line 2, in an illegal stunt that could easily have ended in serious injury or death.
Dangerous new trend reached Budapest
The footage, noticed by Blikk and shared by Hungarian influencer Imre Gábor, shows the two individuals travelling on the roof of a train between Puskás Ferenc Stadium and Pillangó utca stations. After the train emerges from the tunnel near Pillangó utca, they run across the roofs of the moving carriages before getting off at the station. Both individuals have their faces covered, making identification difficult from the footage alone. Gábor said he shared the video because he was astonished that such an incident could happen in Hungary.
BKV warns of potentially fatal dangers
Budapest public transport operator BKV condemned the behaviour in their answer to 444.hu, warning that travelling on the roof of a metro train is both prohibited and life-threatening. The company explained that the space between a train and the equipment installed inside metro tunnels is extremely limited. Cables, supporting structures, signalling systems, safety equipment and ventilation installations all pose additional hazards to anyone riding on the roof.
BKV also highlighted the danger posed by the third rail, which supplies electricity to the metro and carries 825 volts. Contact with the rail can cause a fatal electric shock, while a single misstep could result in a fall or a collision with tunnel infrastructure. The operator said it reviews videos showing similar incidents to help prevent dangerous stunts from happening again. In previous cases, BKV has filed police reports, and there have also been arrests and on-the-spot interventions.

Police launch investigation
The Budapest Police Headquarters confirmed that it is investigating the latest incident following a report. Authorities have not yet announced whether the individuals involved have been identified or detained. The stunt resembles a dangerous trend known as “metro surfing”, which has gained attention in other countries. In New York, a 15-year-old died after falling from the roof of a moving subway train, according to reports cited by Hungarian media.
The Budapest footage has renewed concerns about people attempting extreme challenges for social media attention. Beyond the risk to those involved, such incidents can also create dangerous situations for transport staff and disrupt public services. Authorities and BKV are urging people not to imitate the behaviour. Riding on a moving metro train’s roof is not an adventure: in the confined space of an underground railway, one wrong move can have fatal consequences.
