On October 30 the bedrock-agentcore namespace is discontinued, and every registry record, ARN, and permission that names an agent must move to agent-registry by hand. The first forced registry migration in agent infrastructure shows what happens when the naming layer shifts under the governance layer.
On October 30, 2026, AWS discontinues support for the namespace the AWS Agent Registry was born in. Teams have fifteen days from today, October 15, to complete their migration to the new agent-registry namespace. On the public record this desk tracks, no major cloud has retired an agent registry namespace and forced a customer data migration before; a namespace retirement is not a deprecation warning, it is a structural change to where agents are named and found. The change lands in the identity substrate: the layer that decides how agents are named, discovered, and governed inside the AWS ecosystem.
A namespace acts as the root of naming and discovery for cloud resources. It dictates the structure of Amazon Resource Names (ARNs), the prefixes for Identity and Access Management (IAM) actions, and the identity of service principals. When a provider moves a namespace, they are effectively rewriting the foundation upon which the governance layer is built. This change is scoped specifically to the AWS Agent Registry. Other capabilities like Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Identity, Gateway, Runtime, and Policy will continue to operate under the bedrock-agentcore namespace, creating a fragmented environment that requires careful management.
The transition period began on August 6, 2026, when both namespaces became available. During this window, new customers were directed to the generally available agent-registry namespace, while existing users remained on the preview bedrock-agentcore namespace. AWS initiated this change to resolve confusion regarding production readiness. As AWS notes in its migration guide, “The bedrock-agentcore namespace included both preview and generally available features, which could cause uncertainty regarding production readiness.” Our September coverage of the registry’s general availability carried a September 17 deadline for the namespace move; the guide now served pins the discontinuation to October 30, 2026, and does not explain the earlier date, so the current primary governs. The lack of a dedicated AWS blog post announcing this change means the update lives quietly in the AWS Agent Registry FAQ. The preview namespace itself had a relatively short lifespan, having launched in April 2026 as detailed in the original preview announcement.
Operational reality for platform teams is demanding. Data must be manually migrated from the old namespace to the new one. Because the BedrockAgentCoreFullAccess managed policy does not automatically update existing IAM roles, engineers must hand-edit permissions. Until the migration is complete, teams are forced to maintain IAM policies for both namespaces simultaneously. To track progress, AWS provides comparison reports that classify deltas as NEW, UPDATE, or MISSING. These reports, supported by tooling in the awslabs/agentcore-samples repository, are essential for verifying successful completion before the October 30 cutoff.
This migration carries significant labor costs and technical risk for organizations that have already scaled their agent infrastructure. In our view, the governance layer is the product, while the runtime remains the utility. As we have explored in our coverage of the TrueFoundry enterprise MCP gateway, the Postman Fabric Gateway, and the broader bifurcation of tool discovery, control-plane vendors and gateway architectures sit directly on top of these naming conventions. When the underlying registry namespace shifts, every policy and access control mechanism tied to those names must be revalidated.
The migration process is clearly outlined in the official AWS developer guide, which serves as the primary resource for teams navigating this transition. The mechanics are precise: IAM action prefixes move from bedrock-agentcore:* to agent-registry:*, and the service principal shifts from bedrock-agentcore.amazonaws.com to agent-registry.amazonaws.com. Registry and record ARNs must also be updated to reflect the new namespace. AWS’s own notice is blunt: to avoid “loss of registry data or disruption to your workloads,” the migration must complete before the date. What the guide does not spell out is the day itself: whether the preview namespace goes read-only or is removed outright on October 30. Its warning is the only signal the primary serves, and it points at removal.
This event highlights a critical tension in the current agent stack. As agent-to-agent governance matures, the stability of the naming layer becomes paramount. When the naming layer shifts, everything governing access to it must shift as well. For executives and investors, this serves as a reminder that the infrastructure supporting agent discovery is still in a state of flux. The move to a generally available namespace is a necessary step toward production maturity, but it imposes a heavy tax on the teams currently building on the platform.
As the October 30 deadline approaches, the focus for platform teams must be on rigorous verification. The ability to monitor migration progress through delta reports is the clearest safeguard AWS provides against service disruption. While the transition to agent-registry provides a cleaner, more predictable environment for production workloads, the immediate burden of re-architecting IAM and registry references underscores the volatility inherent in early-stage agent infrastructure. Agent naming is still young enough that one provider can move it wholesale, and every policy above it has no choice but to follow.
