Doosan Enerbility (034020.KS) is moving into guided weapons development with LIG Defense & Aerospace (LIG D&A). The two companies aim to build domestic capability in next-generation guided missile engines, advancing technological self-reliance and global competitiveness in South Korea's defense industry.
Doosan Enerbility said on the 20th that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with LIG D&A to develop guided missile engines. The signing ceremony took place the previous day at Bundang Doosan Tower, attended by Son Seung-woo, head of Doosan Enerbility's Power Service Business Group (BG), and Park Tae-sik, head of LIG D&A's missile systems division.
Guided weapons are smart defense systems that track and strike targets on their own using advanced sensors and control devices. LIG D&A will develop the guided weapon systems, while Doosan Enerbility will develop the engines that go into them. The two companies also agreed to cooperate closely across the entire process, including testing, evaluation and certification support.
Demand for long-range precision strike systems has been rising quickly in the global defense market, making high-performance engines a key competitive edge. The two companies plan to tap into future markets by drawing on the capabilities each has built up — LIG D&A in guided weapon systems and Doosan Enerbility in aircraft engines. Localizing engine production is expected to reduce reliance on foreign technology and remove export restrictions.
"This agreement carries great significance in that we have established a long-term partnership with LIG D&A, which holds the country's top capabilities in guided weapon system development," Son said. "By combining the core technologies both companies hold, we will contribute to the localization of K-defense technology that can compete in the global market."
