The new AI agent is positioned as a proactive rival to OpenAI and Meta, with built-in safeguards for payment data.
Anthropic has rolled out a new AI agent called Claude Duet, according to reporting from Cryptopolitan. The agent is built to handle purchases independently, using a virtual card rather than a user's actual payment credentials. This design choice is meant to limit how much sensitive financial information gets exposed during a transaction.
Cryptopolitan reported that Claude Duet includes mechanisms specifically aimed at preventing identification data from leaking during the purchasing process. That focus on data protection sets it apart from simpler shopping bots that may pass along more user information than necessary. Virtual cards act as a buffer, letting an agent complete a checkout without directly handling a person's primary bank or credit details.
Separately, Inc42 described Claude Duet as a proactive AI agent, framing its release as a competitive move against OpenAI and Meta. Both companies have been investing heavily in agentic systems that can take actions on a user's behalf, rather than simply responding to prompts. Anthropic's entry into this space suggests the company wants a foothold in the emerging market for autonomous task-completion tools.
The idea of a proactive agent marks a shift from earlier chatbot models. Instead of waiting for a user to ask a question, a proactive agent is designed to anticipate needs and take initiative on routine tasks. Shopping and payments are an obvious early use case, since they involve clear, repeatable steps that can be automated.
Privacy and security remain central concerns for any AI system handling money. Giving an agent the ability to make purchases raises questions about how much autonomy it should have, and what safeguards are needed to prevent misuse or data exposure. Anthropic's apparent emphasis on blocking ID leaks suggests the company is trying to address those concerns directly, rather than treating them as an afterthought.
The broader AI industry has been racing to build agents that go beyond text generation. OpenAI and Meta have both signaled interest in tools that can browse the web, manage accounts, or complete transactions autonomously. Anthropic, known for its Claude family of models, has generally positioned itself as a safety-focused alternative to larger competitors. Claude Duet appears to extend that positioning into the agentic AI race, combining transactional capability with stated privacy protections.
Details about how widely Claude Duet will be available, which merchants or platforms it supports, and what virtual card provider is involved were not specified in the available reporting. It also remains unclear how the agent verifies purchases or what limits exist on spending authority. Those operational specifics will likely shape how much trust users and businesses place in the tool.
Market Impact
If Claude Duet performs as described, it could accelerate adoption of AI agents for e-commerce and bill payment, areas where virtual cards and tokenized payment methods have already gained traction. Payment processors and virtual card issuers may see increased interest from AI companies looking to build similar transaction layers into their own agents.
For Anthropic, the launch reinforces its strategy of competing on trust and safety features rather than raw scale. How OpenAI and Meta respond, whether through their own payment-capable agents or expanded privacy tooling, will likely shape how quickly autonomous purchasing agents move from novelty to mainstream financial infrastructure.
Claude Duet signals a broader push toward AI agents that can act, not just answer, with payment security positioned as a key selling point. Wider adoption will depend on how well these privacy claims hold up once the agent reaches more users.
