More than 30 years later after she blew away Street Fighter fans as bazooka-toting Cammy, Kylie Minogue nearly returned for a cameo in the latest feature adaptation.
The 2x Grammy-winning Australian pop icon’s friend and collaborator Orville Peck, who stars as Vega in the newly released Paramount video game movie, revealed that he “was trying to orchestrate” her return, but scheduling conflicts ultimately stood in the way.
“They were trying to get Kylie to do a cameo in our Street Fighter,” he told Queerty. “They were having a hard time getting ahold of her or whatever, and I was like, ‘Guys, I can text her.’ So, I was trying to orchestrate this whole thing, and it didn’t work out with timing. She was gonna be so down to do it.”
Peck added, “But of course, I immediately told Kylie when I got cast. She told me how filming their Street Fighter was one of the most fun experiences of her life, and she was like, ‘I’m so excited for you to get to do that.'”
The Mule artist said he’s “still trying to orchestrate” a meeting between Minogue and Mel Jarnson, who plays Cammy in the Kitao Sakurai-helmed adaptation of the Capcom game.
@queerty This week, Orville Peck makes the jump from country crooner to action star in Street Fighter. But he’s not the first icon of music to do so: Back in 1994, his friend & collaborator Kylie Minogue starred in the original big-screen adaptation of the video game, and he says he texted her immediately when he got the part. And he’s got some tea, too: Apparently they tried to get Kylie to make a cameo in this Street Fighter! While Orville reveals she was “so down to do it,” timing just didn’t align, but he’s still hoping to orchestrate a photo op with his movie’s Cammy—actress Mel Jarnson—or maybe leave the door open for something in a potential sequel. Regardless, Kylie told Orville filming the ‘94 Street Fighter was “one of the most fun experiences of her life,” and it sounds like he felt the same this go-around, especially because he was emboldened to bring his full self to the project, leaning into queer energy to his portrayal of the masked character Vega. “Maybe the sequel, we’ll see,” teased Peck of a potential Minogue cameo.
In 2024, Peck featured Minogue and Diplo on his song “Midnight Ride”, released as a single on his third studio album Stampede.
