The Milwaukee Brewers have enough recognizable talent to make Aaron Ashby an afterthought in a World Series preview. That would overlook the pitcher who gives their entire October strategy room to breathe.
As the Brewers prepare to face the Tampa Bay Rays at home Friday, Ashby should be central to the conversation. His ability to handle multiple difficult innings could determine whether the Brewers finish the championship run their dominant postseason has promised.
The Brewers followed up a 103-win regular season by beating the San Diego Padres in four games and sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ashby has supplied 12 1/3 scoreless innings across six appearances, with 11 strikeouts, four hits, and three walks.

He has thrown more innings than any Brewers pitcher this postseason. Milwaukee has won every game in which he has appeared.
Those numbers establish his value. The circumstances explain why he could swing the World Series.
Against the Padres in the NLDS clincher, Ashby delivered three scoreless, hitless innings between starter Robert Gasser and the bullpen’s late options. He earned the victory while giving manager Pat Murphy an efficient route through the middle innings.
In the NLCS clincher vs. the Dodgers, he handled the final three innings himself. Twice, he escaped with the tying run on third and one out.
That distinction matters. Murphy can ask Ashby to preserve a game before the closing innings or finish one when the matchup demands it. Few tactical advantages matter more than having a trusted pitcher who can do both.
Trevor Megill remains the primary closer, and Abner Uribe supplies another powerful option. Ashby makes their assignments easier by covering outs that would otherwise require additional pitching changes.
Aaron Ashby’s command could decide Brewers’ World Series chances
The Rays could force Milwaukee to use that flexibility repeatedly.
Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz provide dangerous right-handed challenges. Jonathan Aranda offers another demanding assignment, while Chandler Simpson can create pressure with his speed.
Ashby cannot simply wait for a convenient pocket of left-handed hitters. To justify extended appearances, he must navigate different threats without allowing walks to create opportunities for Tampa Bay.
That makes command the most important variable in his series.
His regular season offers reasons for confidence. Ashby posted a 3.12 ERA across 89 1/3 innings, and his ability to miss bats gives him an escape route when contact could score a runner.
However, his 10.7% walk rate also identifies the weakness Tampa Bay should try to exploit. October dominance has not erased the consequences of falling behind hitters.
A free pass can turn a manageable inning into a prolonged appearance. An elevated pitch count can then prevent Murphy from sending Ashby back out, forcing another reliever into the game earlier than planned.
Across a long series, that consequence extends beyond one scoreboard. It could affect which pitchers remain available the following night and how aggressively Murphy can manage another short start.
The Brewers have alternatives. DL Hall and JoJo Romero help make this a collective strength, and Jake Bauers already showed how a hitter can command a series by winning NLCS MVP.
Ashby does not need to carry the Brewers alone. He needs to preserve the flexibility that lets everyone else contribute in favorable situations.
That is the strongest argument for calling him the pivotal overlooked player. His importance reaches beyond the innings attached to his name.
If Ashby continues supplying length without surrendering control of close games, Murphy can deploy the rest of his staff more selectively. If he struggles, those choices become harder and Milwaukee’s margin for error contracts.
The Brewers need four more wins for their first championship. Ashby could determine how often they reach the final innings with their best options intact.
