KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Association of Film Exhibitors (MAFE) has welcomed the Prime Minister's 2027 Budget announcement that local film screenings and theatre performances in the Federal Territories will be exempt from entertainment duty, starting Jan 1, 2027.
In a statement released today, MAFE said that it views the move as a positive step towards supporting Malaysia's creative industries and strengthening the local film ecosystem.
Following the Prime Minister's call for similar exemptions across all states, MAFE also plans to engage with state governments to encourage nationwide adoption.
The association looks forward to working alongside the Ministry of Communications and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) to ensure smooth implementation.
MAFE and its members remain committed to championing local content and supporting the continued growth of Malaysia's film industry.
The 2027 Budget will also provide a major boost to Malaysia's creative arts sector via a RM130 million allocation to strengthen local film, music, and digital content.
The funding includes special financial incentives for both local and international filmmakers who choose to shoot in Malaysia.
Extra perks will go to projects that showcase and celebrate the country's culture and identity.
Local animators will also receive dedicated aid to create 20 new original character brands to bring uniquely Malaysian stories to the global stage.
