When Manchester City saw the chance to put Liverpool away, they didn’t let it slip.
From the moment that Ryan Gravenberch received his marching orders in the 62nd minute, Manchester City put their foot down. The opportunity to pick up a famous win at Anfield was staring Enzo Maresca’s side in the face. They ruthlessly seized on that opening. Erling Haaland opened the scoring three minutes after Gravenberch was sent off. Outstanding goals from Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki sealed City’s win as they scored three goals in thirteen minutes to beat Liverpool.
Enzo Maresca’s side remains a work in progress. This will remain true for some time yet. Despite this, what isn’t in doubt after yesterday’s match is that they have a ruthless streak. When the opportunity was presented to them when Gravenberch was sent off to put Liverpool away, they seized upon it. This was Manchester City’s first win in such a ruthless manner so far this season. They brutally brushed off the challenge of Liverpool at Anfield. The fact that it came in a match with such heightened stakes made it that bit more impressive.
Erling Haaland was thrilled with the character that his team showed, which complements their ruthless streak.
On top of the ruthless edge that Manchester City showed to beat Liverpool yesterday, their character was on full display at Anfield. Erling Haaland praised his team’s character and resilience in an interview with mancity.com after his team’s win over Liverpool. Haaland said: “It was tough and hard. We showed amazing character from Gigio at the back, all the way to the front. I’m so proud of everyone. It’s always tough to come here. It’s about these times to stay strong mentally and stick together. And do what you can do something about. What we can do is play good football and fight together. That’s the only thing we can do.”
Enzo Maresca’s side is resilient and has a strong character. That stood out throughout yesterday’s match at Anfield as the Manchester City players put the noise to one side to pick up a massive three points. They also showed their ruthless side when they were presented with an opportunity to put Liverpool away. It is on early in the season but this City side has the makings of a very strong outfit. They are mentally strong and can put a team away when the moment arises. Those are traits which could carry them along way this season.
