Analysis
Defenders who relied on Citrix's September batch bulletin remain vulnerable to a memory overflow (CVE-2026-88779) reported under active exploitation that requires a second, emergency upgrade.
Organizations relying on NetScaler ADC and Gateway must address a critical operational trap regarding recent security updates. While security teams may have applied the batch bulletin released on September 27, those specific builds do not remediate CVE-2026-88779. Failure to distinguish between the September release and the subsequent emergency patch leaves infrastructure exposed to a memory overflow vulnerability capable of causing a denial-of-service (DoS) condition.
The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2026-88779, resides within the SAML implementation of the affected appliances. Successful exploitation requires the device to be configured as either a SAML Service Provider or an Identity Provider. When these conditions are met, an attacker can trigger a memory overflow, effectively crashing the service and disrupting network operations.
Active exploitation of this flaw is confirmed. Citrix, Sophos, and NHS Digital have all reported observed instances of threat actors leveraging this vulnerability in the wild. The presence of this exploit in active campaigns necessitates immediate attention from security operations centers and network administrators.
The confusion stems from a versioning gap between two distinct security communications. CTX697096, published on September 27, provided a batch of updates that did not include the fix for this specific memory overflow. It was not until the emergency release of CTX697174 on October 3 that the necessary remediation became available.
The urgency of this situation is underscored by the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, which added entries related to this issue on September 27 and October 4. Defenders who relied solely on the initial September bulletin remain vulnerable to the DoS attack vector.
To secure affected environments, administrators must verify their current build versions against the requirements outlined in the October 3 emergency bulletin. Relying on the September 27 batch is insufficient. Immediate patching to the version specified in the emergency release is the only path to mitigating the risk of service disruption from this active exploit.
