Police have opened an inquest after a human skull and several bones were found near Lenham Drive in Phoenix on Tuesday.
Residents say it was the third reported discovery of human remains in the area this year.
Phoenix police have opend an inquest following the recent discovery on Tuesday.
According to police, the skeletal remains were found in a bush.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) said its Phoenix Operations Centre received a call from a man herding cattle who had discovered the remains.
Reaction officers were dispatched to the scene and arrived at approximately 12.26pm.
“First responders proceeded down the steep embankment and located a human skull and several bones amongst the grass,” RUSA said.
A resident, who requested anonymity, said the herdsman approached him and other people who were working on the road to report the discovery.
“He told us that he had seen a skull and bones near the field and asked us to call Reaction Unit South Africa and the police,” the resident said.
The resident expressed concern about the discovery, questioning why there had been no noticeable smell despite the location being close to residential properties.
Another resident, who also requested anonymity, said he saw police and RUSA officers while standing outside his home.
“I was standing outside my house when I saw the police and Reaction Unit officers. I heard from people who were passing by that human remains had been discovered,” he said.
The second resident also questioned the absence of an unusual smell and raised the possibility that the remains could have been dumped at the location.
“It could be that they dumped the remains here,” the resident said.
Both residents said this was the third incident involving human remains in the area this year.
It remains unclear how long the remains had been at the location or the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police have registered an inquest, while the identity of the deceased remains unknown.
