By Zoila Palma: On October 13, 2026, Minister of Economic Development Osmond Martinez represented Belize at the Xingu Finance Talks High-Level Roundtable in Bangkok, Thailand.
“I highlighted how climate disasters increase borrowing needs while debt obligations limit the resources available to build resilience in Small Island Developing States.
Our Farmers in Corazon, Dolores, Machakila have been significantly affected by climate change, just as our coastal communities such as Monkey River, Punta Gorda and Barranco keep eroding and affected by the Sargassum, our people in Bella Vista, Trio and San Pablo affected with flooding and damage to crops,” Minister Martinez said.
Minister Martinez stressed the importance to reaffirm the need for accessible climate finance that responds to national priorities, protects vulnerable communities and supports long-term development.
