Cadillac plans to skip using any major evo joker upgrades for its 2027 racing campaigns in both the WEC and IMSA series. This decision leaves the team relying on a car that has already seen significant changes, which feels like a massive gamble given the incoming competition.
An evo joker is a specific regulatory tool that allows manufacturers to implement major car revisions. According to Yahoo Sports, Cadillac has already used three of its five original allocations for the car’s first five-year period. The team’s recent work includes an electronics update in early 2025 and a larger overhaul this year to improve aerodynamics and braking systems.
The looming threat from rival manufacturers
Staying the course might work if the field stays stagnant, but the landscape is about to get much harder. While Cadillac holds onto its current package, other teams are preparing to strike. Yahoo Sports reported that Ferrari and Peugeot are both planning major upgrades for next year. Ford and McLaren are also joining the Hypercar category, which means the pressure is mounting.
It is easy to see why some might worry about Cadillac carrying over most of its existing setup while others overhaul their cars. Jota team principal Sam Hignett told Motorsport.com, “Not really, because the way everything works, I don’t think there’s much to be concerned about there.” I am not so sure. When the heavy hitters bring new tech, standing still can quickly become falling behind.
Small tweaks are not the same as big leaps
The team is not planning to do absolutely nothing, but small fixes won’t stop a faster car from passing them. Hignett clarified that Cadillac intends to make minor refinements outside of the evo framework. He said, “There’s always little bits and pieces in the name of safety and reliability but nothing major.”
These tiny adjustments might help the V8-powered car stay reliable, but they don’t address the raw speed needed to beat a new McLaren or Ford. Hignett noted that the team is still looking for ways to improve the current version. He said, “There’s always scope to do things and we’re still learning about the evo from this year and optimising that, so there’s still performance to be gained over the winter.”
Cadillac has plenty of reasons to be confident after a strong 2026.
