No. 15 Kentucky Football is heading to Norman, Oklahoma, for another major test after the Wildcats delivered back-to-back overtime wins vs. South Carolina and LSU, winning both games 35-34. Kentucky is now 5-1 on the season, with its only loss coming against Alabama at home, and the Wildcats have plenty of momentum heading into their next SEC matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners, who are coming off a massive triumph of their own.
The Sooners enter the game at 3-2 after pulling off one of the biggest wins of the season, upsetting No. 1 Texas, 27-24, in the Red River Rivalry. Oklahoma secured the victory on a last-second field goal, giving the Sooners plenty of confidence of their own heading into Saturday’s game.
Kentucky and Oklahoma have met three times, with the Wildcats holding a 1-2 record against the Sooners. Their first meeting came in the 1951 Sugar Bowl, following the 1950 season, when Kentucky defeated Oklahoma 13-7 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Sooners won the next two matchups, defeating Kentucky 29-7 in Norman in 1980 and 29-8 in Lexington in 1982. The teams have not played since.
This will be another major test for head coach Will Stein, quarterback Kenny Minchey, and the rest of the Wildcats. However, Kentucky has already shown it can win away from home. The Wildcats defeated Texas A&M in College Station before taking down South Carolina in Columbia, pulling off victories in two places where they were not expected to win.
Stein and his offense have also shown a willingness to take chances when the game is on the line. Kentucky has gone for it on fourth down and elected to attempt game-winning two-point conversions in overtime against South Carolina and LSU. Those decisions have helped the Wildcats come away with two dramatic victories.
Meanwhile, Kentucky’s defense has continued to perform at a high level under defensive coordinator Jay Bateman. After former defensive coordinator Brad White departed following Mark Stoops’ firing, there were questions about whether the defense would take a step back. So far, that has not happened, as the Wildcats have continued to create turnovers and make critical stops in SEC play.
Now, Kentucky will look to make it three straight upsets against an Oklahoma team coming off its biggest win of the season. Here are the biggest things to watch as the Wildcats head to Norman.
Improve Red-Zone Efficiency
Kentucky had several opportunities to put more points on the board during the second half against LSU, but the Wildcats struggled to turn those drives into touchdowns.
Kentucky had five second-half possessions that reached the red zone, but only two resulted in points, both coming on field goals from Adam Zouagui. The Wildcats also failed to convert a fourth-down attempt, while Zouagui missed two field goals. One of those misses came after a sack pushed Kentucky out of the red zone.
Zouagui did connect on a field goal early in the second half and another to send the game into overtime. However, Kentucky could have made the finish much more comfortable by capitalizing on more of its scoring opportunities.
That will be especially important against Oklahoma.
The Sooners have a talented defense that can make life difficult for opposing offenses, and Kentucky cannot afford to leave points on the field. The Wildcats will need to finish drives with touchdowns whenever possible while also making sure they come away with points when the offense stalls.
Kentucky has shown it can make the big play when it matters most. Now, the Wildcats need to be more consistent when they get close to the end zone.
Force and Limit Turnovers
Kentucky’s defense has been one of the team’s biggest strengths, particularly in SEC play. The Wildcats have forced turnovers in every conference game, creating opportunities for the offense and helping Kentucky remain competitive against some of the league’s toughest opponents.
Against Texas A&M, South Carolina and LSU, Kentucky forced two turnovers in each game. The defense has consistently found ways to make game-changing plays, whether through interceptions or fumble recoveries.
The Wildcats also need to keep taking care of the football on offense.
Against Alabama, Minchey threw a pick-six, and Kentucky struggled to keep up as the game got away from the Wildcats in the second half. Since then, however, Kentucky has done a much better job protecting the ball. The offense has avoided turnovers in its wins over Texas A&M, South Carolina and LSU, allowing the defense’s takeaways to make an even bigger difference.
That balance will be critical against Oklahoma.
The Sooners showed against Texas that they can capitalize on defensive and special-teams mistakes. Oklahoma blocked a punt that was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown, while a pick-six and another interception helped swing the game in the Sooners’ favor.
Kentucky cannot afford to give Oklahoma similar opportunities. Minchey must continue making smart decisions, the running backs must protect the football, and the receivers need to secure their catches.
If Kentucky can force turnovers while keeping its own mistakes to a minimum, the Wildcats will give themselves another legitimate chance to pull off an upset.
Limit Sacks and Tackles for Loss
Oklahoma’s defensive front is one of the biggest challenges Kentucky will face this week. The Sooners have been effective at disrupting opposing offenses, and their pass rush could create problems for Minchey if the Wildcats’ offensive line does not perform well.
Through the first five games of the season, Oklahoma recorded 15 sacks, according to ESPN. That production shows how important it will be for Kentucky to protect its quarterback and avoid putting itself in difficult down-and-distance situations.
The offensive line will need to communicate, handle Oklahoma’s pressure packages, and create running lanes for the backs. Minchey will also need to get the ball out quickly when the defense brings pressure and avoid taking unnecessary sacks.
Oklahoma’s victory over Texas showed how disruptive its defense and special teams can be. The Sooners blocked a punt for a touchdown, returned an interception for a score, and came up with another interception that helped set up the winning field goal.
Kentucky’s offense will need to be disciplined from the opening kickoff. If the Wildcats can limit negative plays, sustain drives, and keep Minchey upright, they will have a much better chance of controlling the tempo and coming away with another road victory.
Who will be RB1?
Kentucky’s rushing offense has been a major reason why this team is 5-1 and contending for a CFP berth. CJ Baxter leads the way with 484 yards and eight scores on the ground but is currently listed as questionable to play Saturday. If he’s unable to go, it would be a significant setback, especially as he comes off arguably the best performance of his career in Kentucky’s overtime win over No. 10 LSU.
Thankfully, Kentucky has some firepower behind Barnes. Jason Patterson leads the team in yards per rushing attempt (7.7) and has 361 yards and three scores on the ground. However, he was unable to finish the Week 5 win at South Carolina due to injury, and while he wasn’t listed on last week’s injury report, he only logged eight snaps vs. LSU. He’s not currently on this week’s injury report, so he looks like he’ll play Saturday.
The real story could be Jovantae Barnes making his return to Norman after spending four seasons with the Sooners. Barnes has logged 37 snaps over the past two games compared to just 19 for Patterson, so it looks like the former is who will be next in line if Baxter can’t go.
After missing the start of the season due to injury, Barnes has been solid with the limited touches he’s received. He’s run for 140 yards and one score on 23 carries. You know he’ll be motivated Saturday, but hopefully, he’s playing alongside Baxter and Patterson.
Key Players to Watch
QB John Mateer — 6-foot-1, 224 pounds, Senior
Mateer spent three seasons at Washington State before transferring to Oklahoma. He had a productive 2025 season despite dealing with a right-hand/thumb fracture, completing 247 of 397 passes for 2,885 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
This season, Mateer has completed 90 of 135 passes for 1,038 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions, good for a 66.7% completion percentage. He has also carried the ball 53 times for 70 yards.
Oklahoma’s offense has struggled to find consistency, but Mateer remains an experienced quarterback who can make plays through the air and with his legs. Kentucky will need to pressure him without allowing him to extend plays and find open receivers downfield.
RB Lloyd Avant — 5-foot-10, 212 pounds, Junior
Avant has taken a winding path through college football, playing at Tulsa and Colorado State before arriving at Oklahoma.
He has emerged as one of the Sooners’ primary running backs, recording 52 carries for 236 yards and two touchdowns this season. Kentucky’s front seven will need to limit his production and prevent Oklahoma from establishing a consistent ground game.
If the Wildcats can force the Sooners into obvious passing situations, they can put more pressure on Mateer and make Oklahoma’s offense easier to defend.
RB Jonathan Hatton Jr. — 6-foot-1, 235 pounds, Freshman
Hatton is a true freshman who has already earned opportunities in Oklahoma’s backfield. He has recorded 19 carries for 55 yards this season.
Although he has not produced the same numbers as Avant, Hatton gives the Sooners another option in the running game. Kentucky will need to account for him whenever he enters the lineup, particularly in short-yardage situations.
WR Isaiah Sategna III — 5-foot-10, 185 pounds, Senior
Sategna has spent his college career in the SEC, playing three seasons at Arkansas before moving to Oklahoma.
He has become Mateer’s leading receiving target this season, recording 25 receptions for 331 yards and two touchdowns. His ability to get open and create opportunities through the passing game makes him one of the Sooners’ most important offensive players.
Kentucky’s secondary will need to keep Sategna in front of its defenders and prevent him from turning short receptions into explosive plays.
TE Rocky Beers — 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, Senior
Beers has also played at multiple programs, spending two seasons at FIU and one at Colorado State before joining Oklahoma.
He has been a productive target for the Sooners, recording 22 receptions for 284 yards and two touchdowns. At 6-foot-5, Beers gives Mateer a sizable option over the middle of the field and in the red zone.
Kentucky’s linebackers and safeties will need to account for Beers in the passing game, particularly on third downs when Oklahoma needs to keep a drive alive.

Kentucky has plenty of momentum after winning two straight overtime games against South Carolina and LSU. Oklahoma, meanwhile, will be riding high after upsetting No. 1 Texas, but the Sooners will need to show that their offense can be more consistent against a Kentucky defense that has repeatedly come up with timely stops and turnovers.
The Wildcats must finish drives, protect the football, and give Minchey enough time to make plays against Oklahoma’s defensive front. If Kentucky can do those three things, it has a real opportunity to win its third straight game against a highly ranked opponent.
I expect another competitive game in Norman, but I believe Kentucky’s defensive playmaking and recent confidence will be enough to pull off the upset. I’m predicting a 31-20 victory, Kentucky!
