For a unit that has faced hard questions this season, Saturday offers a chance to deliver its strongest answer. Tennessee’s path to beating Alabama starts with its offensive line. The Vols need clean pockets, room to run, and fewer plays that end behind the line of scrimmage. Against the Crimson Tide, those basics could decide whether number 14 Tennessee sustains drives or spends the afternoon trying to escape third-and-long.
The warning signs were clear against Texas. Tennessee surrendered 10 sacks in a 20-17 loss, a game that showed how quickly pressure can derail Josh Heupel’s offense. Protection involves more than the five blockers, but the line must give each play a chance to develop.
Alabama brings the tools to test that progress
The Crimson Tide enter Knoxville at 5-1 with 17 sacks. Devan Thompkins leads the group with three, while Terrance Green and Yhonzae Pierre have 2.5 each. That spread matters. Tennessee cannot build its protection plan around stopping one defender and assume the rest will take care of itself.
The tackles must handle pressure off the edge. Inside, the guards and center need to prevent quick penetration that forces the quarterback off his spot. When Alabama changes its rush or sends extra pressure, Tennessee must communicate and pass off assignments cleanly.
The Vols Offensive Line Needs To Be On Point
One missed block can wipe out an otherwise sound play. However, pass protection is only half the challenge. Alabama has allowed just 99.8 rushing yards per game and 3.0 yards per carry. Tennessee needs enough success on early downs to keep its full playbook available. If the run game stalls, the Tide can attack obvious passing situations.
That makes creating space for DeSean Bishop a priority. Consistent gains would help Tennessee stay ahead of the chains and give its play-action game more room to work. The Vols enter this matchup after a 24-17 road win over Arkansas. That result kept them moving forward. Now, the offensive front must help turn a hard-fought victory into momentum against a rival with the strength to punish mistakes.
The standard is clear: fewer free rushers, fewer negative plays, and more drives built on manageable downs. Tennessee does not need a perfect afternoon from its offensive line. It needs its most complete one.If the Vols can protect the pocket and create running lanes, they can give their playmakers a chance to decide the game. That is how this matchup becomes a launchpad for the rest of the season. The biggest question is which QB they will be protecting.
