Jayson Tatum, on a recent YouTube video of his summer, reflected on how he found out about the Celtics trading Jaylen Brown to the Sixers. It was a stunning move to a division rival, one the C’s had just lost to in the playoffs. Tatum claimed in the video he was as surprised as everybody else.
But Brown seemingly doesn’t believe in Tatum’s side of the story. He had a quick response to the Tatum video posted on Instagram by Bleacher Report. All Brown commented was a “blue cap” emoji, which is slang for untrue. It’s unclear what part of Tatum’s comments Brown doesn’t believe. But regardless, that one emoji has led to increased scrutiny about the two’s relationship.
Tatum, for his part, was complimentary of his time with Brown in Boston. The two team teamed up for the 2024 NBA championship. Tatum has also spoken about the Brown trade on numerous occasions. Brown’s latest Instagram comment has fueled more speculation on their relationship after sharing a locker room for nine seasons.
“I knew every time I stepped on that court that, when it was time to go to war, I looked to my left and my right and No. 7 was over there, I knew that he was going to do whatever it took for us to try to win,” Tatum said in the video. “The way we pushed each other. I definitely made him better and he made me better. And we made our team better. We made this organization better. We won a championship. We are forever stitched in stone in NBA history. We held up that trophy. It won’t ever be forgotten.”
On the other side, Brown hasn’t spoken much about his time with the Celtics since the deal. Other reports have also mentioned that Brown and Tatum have not talked to each other. During his introductory news conference in Philadelphia, Brown spoke about his love for the city of Boston and the community, but he elected not to comment much on the Celtics themselves.
Brown recently played against the Celtics, though it was in the preseason and none of Boston’s main guys — including Tatum — were present. The first time the teams will play against each other will be Nov. 10 in Philly. Brown returns to Boston for the first time Jan. 21 at TD Garden.
