Argentine football icon Lionel Messi has received the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, becoming the first footballer to win the prestigious Spanish honour individually in recognition of his extraordinary career, contribution to the game and charitable work supporting disadvantaged children.
The Inter Miami captain received the award from Princess Leonor of Spain at a ceremony held at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo on Friday, October 23, in the presence of King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and other distinguished guests. Blueprint reports
The recognition adds another major distinction to Messi’s illustrious career, which has seen him win the FIFA World Cup with Argentina, collect eight Ballon d’Or awards and establish himself as one of the most influential figures in modern football.
The 2026 award was announced on June 3 by the Princess of Asturias Foundation following the recommendation of a jury chaired by Teresa Perales, a Spanish Paralympic swimming champion.
In selecting Messi, the jury recognised not only his achievements on the pitch but also his sustained charitable efforts to improve access to education and healthcare for disadvantaged children.
It also highlighted his consistency, humility, commitment to teamwork and conduct throughout his career, qualities that have contributed to his reputation beyond football.
First footballer to win the honour individually
Messi’s selection marks a milestone in the history of the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, which recognises individuals and institutions whose sporting achievements and wider contributions serve as examples of the positive impact of sport on society.
Although football figures and teams have previously received the distinction, Messi is the first individual footballer to win the award.
Former Barcelona teammates Xavi Hernandez and Iker Casillas jointly received the sports award in 2012, while Brazil’s national football team was honoured in 2002 following its fifth FIFA World Cup triumph.
The distinction places Messi among a distinguished group of athletes recognised for achievements that extend beyond competitive results.
The award comprises a sculpture designed by Joan Miró, a diploma, an insignia and a cash prize of €50,000.
Speaking before the ceremony, Messi expressed excitement at receiving the honour, noting that he understood its significance after spending more than two decades in Spain during his time at Barcelona.
The Argentine’s appearance at the ceremony also attracted football supporters who gathered to celebrate his achievements.
Princess Leonor praised his unique career, highlighting his ability to read matches and make decisive choices while putting the interests of the team above individual recognition.
A career defined by records and trophies
Born in Rosario, Argentina, on June 24, 1987, Messi moved to Spain as a teenager to join Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, where he developed into one of the most accomplished players in football history.
He made his first-team debut in 2004 and went on to spend more than 15 years as a central figure in Barcelona’s senior side.
During his time at the Catalan club, Messi won numerous domestic and international honours, including four UEFA Champions League titles, 10 La Liga championships and seven Copa del Rey trophies.
His performances helped Barcelona establish a dominant period in European football, particularly during the years when the team was coached by Pep Guardiola and later Luis Enrique.
Messi’s individual achievements have been equally remarkable. He has won the Ballon d’Or eight times, more than any other player, and has repeatedly set records for goals, assists and appearances.
After leaving Barcelona in 2021, he joined Paris Saint-Germain, where he spent two seasons before moving to Major League Soccer side Inter Miami in 2023.
His arrival in the United States brought further international attention to the club and contributed to the growing global profile of football in North America.
At Inter Miami, Messi has continued to influence the team’s performances while attracting supporters from different parts of the world.
World Cup triumph cemented Argentina legacy
One of the defining moments of Messi’s career came at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he captained Argentina to the title after a dramatic final against France.
Argentina won the final on penalties following a 3-3 draw after extra time, ending a 36-year wait for the country’s third World Cup crown.
Messi scored twice in the final and played a decisive role throughout the tournament, earning the Golden Ball as the competition’s outstanding player.
The triumph completed a major chapter in his international career after years of criticism over Argentina’s inability to win football’s biggest prize during his earlier appearances.
He had already helped Argentina win the 2021 Copa América before adding the 2022 World Cup and another Copa América title in 2024.
His international success, combined with his club achievements, has strengthened his standing among the most decorated players in the sport.
Recognition extends beyond football
The Princess of Asturias jury placed particular emphasis on Messi’s contribution to society outside the pitch.
Through the Leo Messi Foundation, established in 2007, the footballer supports initiatives aimed at improving children’s access to education and healthcare, particularly those facing difficult social and economic circumstances.
Messi has also served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2010, supporting campaigns focused on children’s rights and welfare.
These activities formed an important part of the reasoning behind his selection for the award, which recognises the wider social value of sporting achievement.
The honour reflects the foundation’s approach to sports recognition, which considers not only victories and records but also the example athletes set through their conduct, solidarity and commitment to society.
Messi’s career has frequently been associated with teamwork and consistency, attributes highlighted by the jury in its announcement.
Barcelona and Inter Miami celebrate Messi
Messi’s former club Barcelona and current side Inter Miami congratulated him following the presentation.
Barcelona praised his outstanding talent and lasting impact on and off the pitch, describing his relationship with the club as an inseparable part of its history.
Inter Miami also celebrated their captain, highlighting the significance of his achievement and the values his career represents.
The reactions underline Messi’s continuing influence across different football communities, from Spain, where he spent much of his professional career, to the United States, where he currently plays.
The Princess of Asturias Award is one of several major international distinctions Messi has received during his career. However, its emphasis on sporting excellence alongside social commitment gives it a significance beyond the conventional list of football trophies.
His latest recognition further highlights the enduring impact of a career that has combined individual brilliance, collective success and charitable engagement.
For Messi, the honour represents another milestone in a football journey that began in Rosario, flourished in Barcelona, reached its international peak with Argentina’s World Cup triumph and continues in Major League Soccer.
It also reinforces the growing recognition that the influence of elite athletes can extend beyond the field, particularly when their achievements are accompanied by sustained efforts to support communities and create opportunities for vulnerable children.
