Three crew and six passengers aboard a Challenger 604 aircraft with registration T7-SEI, operated by Triton aviation, landed safely after the aircraft door flung open mid-air on Thursday.
Reports indicated that the aircraft was en route Lagos from Abuja before the incident and thereafter requested for return to the Nnamdi Azikiwe international airport in Abuja.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has disclosed that it had commenced an investigation into the incident.
The Bureau said the aircraft departed Abuja for Lagos on Thursday at 1612 UTC.
“At three nautical miles, passing 3,500 feet, the crew declared a mayday after the aircraft’s door separated,” it said.
The aircraft, it was learnt, returned to Abuja and landed safely on Runway 22 at 1634 UTC, with nine persons on board, comprising three crew members and six passengers.
A statement by the NSIB Director General, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., said the door had been recovered and secured at the NSIB wreckage hangar.
“The Bureau has commenced its investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the occurrence. NSIB will provide further updates as the investigation progresses,” the statement read in part.
