JOHOR BARU: MIC will campaign across Melaka to help Barisan Nasional (BN) secure victory in the upcoming state election, despite contesting only one seat.
MIC president Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran said the party would mobilise its machinery statewide, with strategic discussions underway to strengthen support among Indian voters.
He said MIC had secured nearly 49 per cent of Indian voter support in the Negri Sembilan state election despite losing both seats it contested and having no parliamentary or state assembly representation.
"Even without state government support or official allocations, we still managed to secure nearly 49 per cent of Indian voters' support. This is not easily achieved without grassroots acceptance," he said after opening the Johor MIC convention yesterday.
MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan and Johor MIC chairman K. Raven Kumar were also present.
Vigneswaran said BN could have an advantage in Melaka as it currently governs the state and has elected representatives and local councillors to support its campaign machinery.
He said these factors could help MIC and BN strengthen their support among Indian voters and improve their chances at the polls.
The Election Commission has set Nov 14 as polling day for the 16th Melaka state election, with nomination on Oct 31 and early voting on Nov 10.
