Overview:
LLM routing sends each task to a suitable model based on cost, speed, and complexity.
A mix of small and advanced models can reduce API costs while preserving answer quality.
Clear routing rules help businesses balance accuracy, response time, and AI spending.
A powerful AI model can solve hard problems, but it may cost far more than a simple task needs. Rewriting a basic email doesn’t require the same skill as fixing a tricky software bug or drafting a detailed legal report. When an app sends every request to a premium model, the API bill climbs fast. Large language model (LLM) routing is a practical way to hold that cost down without a major drop in answer quality.
Routing means picking the best model for each request. A router examines the task, cost limits, speed needs, and model strengths before passing the prompt along. Easy tasks go to a cheap model, and hard ones go to a more advanced option.
How an LLM Router Selects a Model
The router sits between an app and its AI models. It reads the request, then picks a model using set rules or a prediction of how hard the task is. A customer support app, for example, might use a small model for common questions and a stronger one for complicated complaints. A coding tool might send simple edits to a low-cost model and difficult bugs to a premium one.
Some routers rely on fixed rules like task type, prompt length, or the user’s plan. Others use a small classifier to predict the right model. More advanced setups check the first answer and escalate to a stronger model if it fails a quality check. That can improve results, but the extra model calls can push costs back up.
Main Costs and Possible Savings
LLM costs usually depend on input and output tokens. Input tokens are the prompt and any other text sent in, and output tokens are the model’s reply. Providers charge different rates for each model, so a large one can cost much more than a small one.
Take a sample app with one million requests a month, each using 1,000 input tokens and 300 output tokens. At a small-model rate of USD 0.10 per million input tokens and USD 0.50 per million output tokens, the bill is USD 250 a month. At a mid-tier rate of USD 1 and USD 5, the same workload costs USD 2,500. At a premium rate of USD 5 and USD 25, it reaches USD 12,500.
A router can shrink that bill if small and mid-tier models handle most requests well. The lowest token price isn’t always the lowest total cost, though. A weak answer may need a retry, extra checks, or human review. Cost per successful task is a better measure than cost per request.

What Recent Model Updates Mean for Routing
Model prices and abilities shift often, so a routing plan needs regular review. On October 13, 2026, Google introduced Gemini 4 Argon for complex work like software engineering, finance, law, and science. Launch pricing starts at USD 2 per million input tokens and USD 10 per million output tokens, and those introductory rates are set to double after November 30, 2026.
That’s a good reminder to keep a clear cost plan. A premium model may deliver strong results on hard tasks, but its price can dent the monthly budget. Teams should check official provider pricing before each major update and test new models on real tasks instead of trusting model names.
How to Choose the Right Models
The best set of models depends on the work. Customer support tools need clear answers, low costs and fast replies. Document apps need good text extraction, long-context support, and accurate summaries. Coding tools need strong code skills and reliable reasoning. Apps handling private data also have to check data retention, access rules, and regional limits before picking a provider.
A useful test set measures answer quality, cost, speed, error rates and safety. Median response time shows typical speed, while the 95th percentile shows how slow the worst common cases get. Teams should also track how often a model fails and how much each retry adds to the bill.
A Practical Way to Start
Keep the first plan simple. Set a baseline with the current model and record its cost, speed, and success rate. Then pick two or three models that differ clearly in price or skill. Use fixed rules for easy tasks and hard limits, and add a stronger-model fallback for answers that fail checks.
Before launch, run the router on the same requests as the original model. Start with a small slice of live traffic and watch for quality drops, timeouts, and surprise costs. Add more models only when the tests show a clear benefit.

Real Value of LLM Routing
Routing pays off most when an app handles many kinds of requests. It can cut costs, improve speed, widen model choice, and reduce dependence on one provider. A complex router can also add delays and create more work for the team.
The strongest approach starts with assigning each task to the cheapest model that still meets the required quality and safety level. This keeps things practical and gives every model a clear job. The aim isn’t to use the cheapest model for everything, but to pay for advanced AI only when the task calls for it.
FAQs
1. What is LLM routing?
LLM routing is a method that directs each prompt to a suitable large language model based on task needs, cost, speed, or complexity.
2. Why does LLM routing matter?
It helps businesses control API costs, improve response times, and reserve advanced models for tasks that need stronger reasoning or accuracy.
3. How does LLM routing reduce AI costs?
A router can send simple requests to lower-cost models and use more expensive models for complex tasks. This approach can reduce average costs per request.
4. What factors should guide model selection?
Key factors include answer quality, task complexity, input and output token prices, response speed, reliability, and data privacy requirements.
5. Is LLM routing suitable for small businesses?
Yes. Small businesses can use simple rules to select models based on task type and budget, then refine those rules as usage grows.
