Malaysia’s homegrown navigation app TuJu has recorded more than 700,000 downloads, positioning it as an alternative to Waze and Google Maps, says LLM
CYBERJAYA: Malaysia’s homegrown navigation application TuJu has recorded more than 700,000 downloads to date, positioning it as an alternative to Waze and Google Maps.
Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) deputy director-general (Operations) Dr Mohammed Ridzuan Jahidin said the application, developed in collaboration with Prosignal Consortium Sdn Bhd, offered a range of practical features tailored to the needs of Malaysian road users.
“One of TuJu’s key features was the integration of live-streaming closed-circuit television (CCTV) feeds, enabling users to monitor highway traffic conditions in real time,” he said at a briefing on current national security issues here today.
Also present were National Security Council (MKN) director-general Datuk Raja Nushirwan Zainal Abidin and National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) chief executive Dr Megat Zuhairy Megat Tajuddin.
Mohammed Ridzuan said the application also featured an emergency SOS button, allowing users to contact highway concessionaires directly in the event of an emergency or when facing problems on the road.
Meanwhile, LLM Operations and Maintenance director Mohd Shahrir Amin Ahmad said that since the first version was introduced in November last year, the authority had been working to enhance the service through MyTuJu Version 2.0, which comes with a range of more advanced features.
He said the latest version expanded on existing functions by incorporating information on accidents along routes, a directory of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and integrated local points of interest.
“Users can also set fixed destinations and use the navigation feature to locate their parked vehicles in large parking areas.
“Version 2.0 has been launched for Android users, while its release for iOS is expected by the end of this month, pending the completion of testing on the Apple App Store,” he said.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim encouraged the public to use TuJu, developed by LLM, as an alternative for road navigation.
He said the alternative was being recommended in view of concerns over the security of information and Malaysians’ movement data arising from the use of Waze, which is subject to Israeli laws.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar also said in a letter dated Oct 20 that the ban on the use of Waze by civil servants took effect immediately.
