Police took a suspect into custody after an egg was reportedly thrown near a Durga idol immersion procession in Hyderabad early on Sunday, prompting participants and some residents to stage a protest.
The incident occurred around 2 am in a lane within the limits of Madannapet police station. A police official said the egg fell near the procession.
“We received information that an egg was thrown when the Durga Mata idol procession was passing through a lane at around 2 am,” another police official said.
Police registered a case under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting a religion or religious beliefs, an official said.
Senior police officials visited the spot and spoke to the procession organisers. Investigators were examining CCTV footage, officials said.
The situation in the area was peaceful, police said, urging the public not to spread rumours. Further investigation was underway.
