Michigan struggled in the first half against Penn State, trailing 3-0 going into the break. That is when Kyle Whittingham and Jason Beck made the switch at quarterback, benching Bryce Underwood in favor of Tommy Carr. Now, there are questions about whether Carr will remain the starter, as he led Michigan to the victory over Penn State, 21-18.
Now, Whittingham is speaking about how benching Underwood happened and why, per Clayton Sayfie of TheWolverine.com.
“The conversation was handled by Jason Beck, who’s the QB coach and coordinator. Bryce couldn’t have handled it any better. He was supporting Tommy and helping him between series. I love Bryce Underwood. He’s a competitor, got a lot of want-to and has a great personality,” Whittingham said.

Carr provided a spark to the offense. In the first half, Michigan punted three times while Underwood was intercepted twice. Meanwhile, Carr completed five of seven passes for 47 yards while also rushing for 36 yards and a touchdown.
“It’s tough, but going into the game, we had a lot of evaluation over the bye week – and Tommy got half the reps over the bye week, and he probably would have anyway,” Whittingham added. “The timing of it is a fine line to walk right there. We just felt – and it really was a decision by the offensive staff, and I supported it. I wasn’t against it. They said thinking of making a change.”
If Carr remains the starter, he will have a tall task in front of him. Michigan hosts and top-ten-ranked Indiana on Saturday.
