Nick Sirianni faced a tough room on Monday after the Philadelphia Eagles fell 25-14 to the Carolina Panthers, dropping them to 2-4. The coach expected questions about a slumping team. Instead, one topic dominated the session, and it centered on quarterback Jalen Hurts. What Sirianni said, and how he said it, quickly became the story, and it left fresh questions hanging over the organization.
Nick Sirianni Clashes with Reporter over Jalen Hurts Flight Decision
The exchange came during Sirianni’s Monday press conference, hours after the Eagles and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, released a joint statement. It confirmed that Hurts has deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning clots in both lungs. League sources told CBS Philadelphia he is expected to miss the rest of the season.
The questions grew sharper because of the timeline. Hurts was cleated against the Rams on Oct. 4 and sought treatment on Oct. 8. A London ultrasound before the Jaguars game showed a superficial clot, and doctors cleared him to play.
PennLive reported that they also told him not to sleep before the game as a precaution. Hurts played in the 19-17 loss, then flew home with the team.
Reporters pressed Sirianni on both decisions. Asked why Hurts was allowed to fly home from London with a blood clot, the coach replied:
“Again, I’m not a medical expert, same type same deal there,” Sirianni said. “We get medical information from our guys, and we always put the players health first and foremost in every situation.”
Earlier, when asked if the Eagles could have done anything differently, Sirianni said, “I have full trust and full faith in them,” about the medical staff. He also repeated that the team had issued multiple statements.

Sirianni declined to name who on the medical staff joined the pregame talks about Hurts’ availability, and he kept the quarterback’s reaction private.
Even before the diagnosis became public, one doctor had raised an alarming possibility about where this was heading
Doctor Flagged Season-Ending Risk for Jalen Hurts Before Eagles Update
Two days earlier, sports medicine specialist Dr. Brian Sutterer weighed in after the team placed Hurts on injured reserve.
Sutterer warned online, “don’t be surprised when the next news is that his season is over.” He explained that a superficial clot can extend into a deep vein clot, which can lead to a pulmonary embolism.

The Eagles now say Hurts is clinically stable and his treatment should involve only blood thinners. The team expects a full recovery, and he can return to contact football once he is off them.
Still, the bigger picture looks bleak for Philadelphia. Hurts, 28, had thrown for 933 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions before sitting out, and fans have already slammed the organization over the handling.
The Eagles (2-4) have lost four straight and now host the Dallas Cowboys (2-4) for Monday Night Football on Oct. 26. Tanner McKee is expected to keep leading the offense, while Sirianni will likely face more questions about Hurts.
