The conversation on the Over 1M Podcast shows Lenny calmly walking through a career path that few would have anticipated for a matatu driver.
How Lenny got the matatu job
Lenny explained that his entry into George Ruto's inner circle was not planned but rather came through a vehicle transaction.
He used to drive a matatu known as Matrix, which eventually caught the attention of his former employer. When that employer decided to sell the vehicle, George Ruto's camp stepped in and purchased it.
Rather than replacing the driver who came with the matatu, the new owner chose to keep Lenny on, a decision rooted entirely in trust.
"After he bought the matatu, he told him not even to change the driver; he had no issues with me. Yes, alikuwa ananitrust," Lenny said, reflecting on how the relationship was built from that early moment.
From there, the working relationship deepened, and Lenny gradually earned more responsibility within the household.
From driver to fleet coordinator
By the time of the interview, Lenny's role had expanded well beyond simply ferrying passengers from place to place.
He confirmed that he currently coordinates all of George Ruto's vehicles under the new sacco, putting the number at eight cars under his watch.
More significantly, Lenny revealed he has taken on a leadership role in a sacco, overseeing routes within 98 Sacco and matatus operating under its umbrella.
He acknowledged that given the scale of the operation, there are other managers handling different routes while he oversees the broader coordination.
The interview painted the picture of a man who used the access and trust that came with driving a prominent figure to quietly build a wider professional footprint.
For many Kenyans who follow matatu culture closely, Lenny's story lands as a real-world example of how proximity to opportunity can reshape a career entirely.
