Minister of Health Dr Austin Demby has held discussions with a high-level delegation from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) on sustainable financing models to support Sierra Leone’s health sector reforms.
The meeting, held on Monday, October 12, 2026, focused on strengthening the country’s health financing system through a proposed universal basic package of health services, free at the point of care, alongside a complementary contributory health insurance package.
The reforms aim to improve access to essential healthcare while reducing the financial burden on individuals and families seeking medical treatment.
According to the Ministry of Health, the proposed financing model is intended to ensure that essential health services remain accessible when needed, while health facilities receive timely funding to maintain adequate supplies of medicines, vaccines and other essential resources.
The engagement forms part of broader efforts to establish sustainable financing mechanisms capable of supporting the delivery of healthcare services across the country.

The Ministry said sustainable health financing is also central to accelerating progress towards the government’s Triple Zero agenda. Gains made through the 300 Days of Activism have highlighted the importance of leadership, real-time data and frontline action in improving health outcomes.
As part of the ongoing engagement, the Ministries of Health, Finance, and Planning and Economic Development are working with UNECA this week to assess financing projections and identify sustainable domestic funding options for the health sector.

The discussions are expected to support Sierra Leone’s efforts to develop a financing framework that strengthens the health system, improves access to essential services and protects households from financial hardship associated with illness.
