Changpeng Zhao thinks the future of crypto security looks a lot like a 1990s Game Boy Color.
On October 14, 2026, the Binance co-founder said all hardware wallets should eventually ship with see-through cases. The idea is to let users check for signs of tampering with their own eyes.
The timing is not random. Only days earlier, reports surfaced of a suspected supply-chain attack involving Ledger devices sold through a single reseller. Those reports tied the incident to losses of approximately $86 million.
What CZ said, and what set it off
Zhao’s comment came in response to a new tampering-detection tool called tampered.app. The tool is built to flag anomalies in hardware wallets from brands including Ledger, OneKey, and Trezor.
On October 9 and 10, reports emerged about suspected tampering with Ledger devices sold by CryptoBilis, a reseller based in Southeast Asia.
The reported losses ran primarily in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and TRON. Ledger is investigating both the reported tampering and user claims of losses.
Isolated incident, not a systemic flaw
Zhao did not use the moment to pile on Ledger. He characterized the problem as likely isolated and connected to one vendor.
In his view, the incident does not point to a broader flaw in Ledger’s products. The weak link, if his read holds, was the path the device took to reach the buyer, not the device design itself.
Zhao also reaffirmed his support for hardware wallets and self-custody more generally. He pointed to investments by YZi Labs in several wallet products, including OneKey, SafePal, and Trust Wallet. His argument was that different wallets fit different users, depending on their risk profiles.
Worth noting: OneKey is one of the brands the tampered.app tool covers, and it is also a YZi Labs portfolio company.
Transparent wallets already exist
The see-through concept is not purely hypothetical. A prototype called the Crystal wallet already uses a transparent epoxy casing. Its internal components are sealed in resin and fully visible from the outside.
What this means for wallet makers and users
For users, the immediate lesson is less about casing and more about sourcing. The suspected attack centered on one reseller, which puts a spotlight on buying devices through channels you can trust.
Tools like tampered.app add another layer. They give buyers a way to check for anomalies before trusting a device with real funds.
A clear case helps you spot a crude modification, but most users are not trained to recognize a suspicious chip on a circuit board. Visibility is only useful if people know what they are looking at.
For now, the key variable is Ledger’s investigation. If it confirms the problem was limited to CryptoBilis, Zhao’s framing of an isolated vendor issue gets stronger. If it turns up something broader, the conversation shifts from case design to something much harder to fix.
