Colombo, Oct. 20 (Daily Mirror) - An amber advisory has been issued for severe lightning in seven provinces and the Kurunegala District, effective until 1.30 a.m. tomorrow (21), the Department of Meteorology said.
The advisory, issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 11.30 a.m. today (20), warns that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, North Central, Eastern, Northern, Uva and Southern provinces, as well as the Kurunegala District.
Temporary localised strong winds may also occur during thundershowers, the department warned.
The public has been urged to take adequate precautions to minimise damage and risks caused by lightning.
People are advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid taking refuge under trees. They should also stay away from open areas, including paddy fields, tea plantations and water bodies, during thunderstorms.
The department further advised the public to avoid using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to power sources during thunderstorms, as well as open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats.
The public has also been urged to remain alert to fallen trees and power lines and contact local disaster management authorities for emergency assistance.
