Nearly 20,000 people are also employed across Honda Malaysia, its dealer network, and supplier partners nationwide.
PRODUCTION of the facelifted 2026 Honda City Hatchback has begun at Honda Malaysia’s manufacturing plant in Melaka, which suggests that its official launch is now close.
The first unit rolled off the production line on October 6, less than a week after Honda Malaysia opened bookings for the updated hatchback.
It follows the recent launch of the facelifted City Sedan, completing the next stage of the refreshed City line-up.
Beyond the car itself, Honda Malaysia is also using the production rollout to underline the depth of its local manufacturing operations.
The company says it has worked with approximately 500 local suppliers to date, forming what it describes as a broader domestic automotive ecosystem around its Melaka plant.
Nearly 20,000 people are also employed across Honda Malaysia, its dealer network, and supplier partners nationwide.
Honda Malaysia began manufacturing vehicles locally in 2003 and says it has continued to expand its domestic manufacturing capabilities since then.
The localisation message was also highlighted by Japan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Malaysia, Shikata Noriyuki, who attended the production rollout.
He praised Honda Malaysia for combining Japanese technology and manufacturing expertise with Malaysian talent, local suppliers, and industrial capabilities, adding that the company’s commitment to localisation was particularly noteworthy.
The emphasis here goes beyond simply saying the City Hatchback is assembled in Malaysia. Honda is positioning its local operation as part of a wider supply chain involving domestic suppliers, manufacturing capabilities, dealerships, and employment.
However, the company does not disclose a localisation percentage for the facelifted City Hatchback, nor does the release provide a breakdown of which components are sourced locally.
The City Hatchback has been produced in Malaysia since its introduction here in 2021, with more than 51,000 units sold locally to date.
For the latest facelift, Honda has already confirmed refreshed exterior styling, upgraded connectivity, and the continued availability of its ULTRA Seats. Full specifications and pricing are being held back until the official launch.
