Saturday went from bad to worse for Cincinnati defensive tackle Josh Hough, thanks to the driver of the medical cart at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, West Virginia.
In the second quarter of West Virginia’s 45-42 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats on TNT, Hough remained face down on the turf after an otherwise routine screen play by West Virginia. Hough eventually hobbled off the field with assistance, and replay showed an apparent lower leg injury.
A few minutes later, TNT Sports’ J.B. Long tossed it down to sideline reporter Jared Greenberg, who relayed an unfortunate and wholly unpredictable update on Hough.
Cincinnati DT Josh Hough is carted off with an injury at West Virginia and only ends up in more pain after the cart backs him into a wall.

“The one-time running back at Syracuse, Hough, turned D-lineman, his left shoe and sock off,” Greenberg said. “And guys, while he got carted off, it appeared the cart backed him into the wall, which may have potentially caused even more pain. He had his face in a towel the entire time the cart took him from the sideline into the Cincinnati locker room.”
The TNT cameras caught the exact moment Greenberg described. In the clip, the cart rolls backward. While we can’t see his left foot from this angle, Hough’s pained reaction suggests the cart pinned his already-injured foot between the cart and the wall. After grimacing, Hough draped his face in a towel.
Hough, Cincinnati’s leader in sacks, did not return to the game. Cincinnati head coach Scott Satterfield briefly commented on Hough in his postgame press conference.
“It’s a big blow,” Satterfield said. “Hough’s our starting nose. Not having him there for pass and run, you know, now you’re going down. […] You’re starting to get more of the depth. We’re not as deep as we need to be.”
From the looks of it, West Virginia might want to examine its depth at the medical cart driver position, too.
